Since 1980, Mount St. Helens has been an important natural laboratory for geologic and biological research.  The Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument was established in 1982 to preserve 110,000 acres of the 1980 blast zone and to provide opportunities for recreation, research and education.

Mount St. Helens Science and Learning Center

In 2012, the USFS Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument and its supporting partners reopened the Coldwater Ridge Visitor Center at the Mount St. Helens Science and Learning Center.  The Learning Center is dedicated to connecting people with nature through science, the arts and adventure recreation.
